About the school The Fatimagiri convent was started on June 1971 in Chandakunnu-Nilambur, aside the Calicut Otty road, on an expanse of ten acres. Two months later, on first June, the school was started with 6 pupils on roll. For the 27 years, the school imparted specialized instruction at the lower primary stage, with classes 1 to 4 and kindergarten In 1999 the school was upgraded to a high school and switched over to CBSE Syllabus. History Of School After thirty nine years of its glorious existence in the historic land of Teak, in the hill valley of the Nilgiris, Fatimagiri still remains a centre of learning for the young minds, hungry for wisdom. 'Every long journey begins with a simple step.' She had a humble beginning; an idea of opening a school originated in the minds of three thoughtful men Mr. K.V. Cherunni (Sr.Theodolind's father), Mr. Thomas Pottamkulam and Fr.George Kazhukkachalil, the Vicar, Little Flower church, Nilambur. The most favourable situation came when the missionaries of Francis de Sales (M.S.F.S.) intended to shift their philosophy students from Fatimagiri College. The news was brought to Calicut by Mr. K.V. Cherunni and his friends that the M.S.F.S. congregation was willing to hand over the fully equipped establishment (Fatimagiri College) with a 10 acre plot on reasonable terms. Realising that only a religious congregation would find it useful, a building planned, built and equipped for a monastery, the trio went to Calicut with the offer to the Apostolic Carmel. Sr.Mary, the Regional Superior of the Apostolic Carmel drove to Nilambur along with a few sisters. They Went, They Saw and They were conquered. It was not the building nor the hill slope, the solitude nor the furniture fittings that seemed to call the sisters; but the numerous middle class and poor families that clustered immediately behind the road that led up to Fatimagiri. There was the possibility of social work among the backward women and their children. In the words of Sr. Mary " If according to our charism we were to promote every human situation through Education and other works of mercy, here we could find illiteracy, insanitation, sickness and many other situations into which the sisters could carry the love of Christ." Three of our sisters (Sr. Theresia A.C, Rosabelle A.C and Berenice A.C.) stayed at Sr. Theodolinda's house for a few days to make a study of the situation at close quarters. A dispensary was a necessity in the neighbourhood of Fatimagiri but the people who were aware of our schools in Malabar, somehow wanted us to open a school. Though it was the dire need and a moral necessity to separate the teen age girls at the High School level from the boys in the Govt. school, a private nursery and English Medium school was the only possibility then. Since the building was already available it would serve as a strong foundation and in few years, help to open the way to a Social Welfare Centre, which was their real objective. The congregation agreed in one voice to accept Fatimagiri from the M.S.F.S. fathers. On 26 April 1971 the sisters Agatha, Alcina and Elia of the Apostolic Carmel occupied the monastery of the Missionaries of St.Francis de Sales (M.S.F.S.) at Fatimagiri. The little school was opened on 1 June 1971 with 6 pupils on roll and Sr.Agatha A.C. as the first H.M. The strength grew to 20 by the end of the month. Our reputation as educators was almost historiacally a 'Label' in Nilambur and four little boarders came in from neighbouring estates. Sr.Christina A.C. laid the foundation of good English Education in Kindergarten and Class one, within 6 months the number increased to 40. In January 1972, the number in the school rose to 70 and standard II was opened. The children were given the blue and cream uniforms with red ties. In 1976 the project of Informal Education for the poor in our immediate neighbourhood was launched. They were taught 3 Rs (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic), hygiene and Moral Science. Fatimagiri English Medium Primary School flourished year after year as children flocked from far and near. They had to limit the number of admissions for want of accommodation. The total strength grew to 300, the number of boarders were also on the increase. The students of standard IV were sent to Govt. U.P. School, Nilambur for their final examination which enabled them to acquire a transfer certificate to join other schools to continue their education. The parents saw the need of constructing a stage for the school and helped to build the same. In 1985 with the contribution of the parents of boarders, 5 cents of land was bought for a poor lady, their dobby. To instill social awareness in the children they were encouraged to collect clothes and money and distribute to the less fortunate of the locality. A hall was built for the K.G section in 1996, adjacent to the stage. The number in the school rose to 334. The visit of our Superior General Sr.M.Vincent A.C. in October 1999 was a memorable event in the history of Fatimagiri. The necessity of a convent and the up-gradation of the school came strongly in the mind of the Superior General. The parents of our students met the Superior General with the same request. Since the existing building was a compact one and most suited for a school, the parents proposed to put up the convent and shift the sisters so that the entire building could be used for the school. Sister Vincent found it acceptable. After obtaining the necessary permission from the Provincial Superior, the parents began the work in great enthusiasm. To obtain N.O.C. from the state Govt. and Affiliation from the C.B.S.E. Board were the two hurdles before them. The Executive committee was formed and the work of up-gradation and the building progressed side by side. Sr.Purifica A.C., the then Headmistress visited the houses of students along with the staff and executive members. All helped generously towards this and the building work began in July 1999. Sr.Purifica A.C. and Dr.George Jacob met the Education minister at Trivandrum to get the N.O.C. All the file work was done solely by Prof. Abraham Padinjattidam. With the influence of Dr.George Jacob we got N.O.C by August 1999. The file then was moved to C.B.S.E Board, Delhi with the recommendation of the State Govt. A commission was sent on 4 May 2000 from Delhi. The report was good and on 28 June 2000 we got the affiliation from C.B.S.E., Delhi. Thus the school was up-graded to C.B.S.E High School under the guidance of Sr.Purifica A.C., the manager and Sr.Amala A.C., the principal of the school. Sr.Sunila A.C., Sr.Rose Thomas A.C. and Sr.Grace Thomas A.C succeeded her. The newly built convent was blessed on 7 February 2000 by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Maxwell Noronha the then bishop of Calicut. The K.G. classes were separated from the High school. They had their own building and setting up of a gym was planned. The first batch of the school passed out the A.I.S.S.E in 2003. They brought laurels to the school with their excellent results. This is kept up by all the batches up to 2008- 2009. The construction of the New School building that began in March 2002 was completed in September 2003. The classes VIII, IX and X were shifted to the new building when the school re- opened after the Onam Holidays Many clubs were introduced in 2000 to give the children an all round training and knowledge in Science, languages, reading habits and discipline. All the National and Religious festivals were celebrated with great enthusiasm. Master Clint Tomin Thomas deserves a special mention considering his wonderful performance in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. He was selected by the C.B.S.E, to join the 15 days tour to Japan. Clint is a special Jade of Fatimagiri, who brought name and fame to the school, bagging many covetous prizes and awards at the district, state and national levels. This proves that the students are given opportunities to better themselves other than comparing oneself with the other. We mould our students physically fit, mentally strong, and morally upright, emotionally well balanced and intellectually well informed. In accordance with these principles we arranged various programmes and activities during this academic year. We succeeded in arranging two classes; the first session was conducted by Dr. Shajee George, Clinical Counsellor and Psychologist, NIMS hospital, Wandoor. The second session was led by Rev. Fr. Chandy Punakkatt, Vicar, Little Flower Church, Nilambur. We gratefully remember them. The 2010, marks another phase in the development of the school, as upgradation process is in progress. Sooner or later our school is going to be a Higher Secondary; besides Alumni is being organized and the inauguration of the school website www.………created by them is to be done on the Annual day this year. The eventful history of the school is unfolded through this report. We have a long way to go and we look forward to a bright future. We remain grateful to God the Almighty, for guiding our every step. The band of Fatimagiri expresses our sincere thanks to all the managers and principals who rendered their dedicated services to make this institution to this present status. Let the motto of our institution 'LEAD KINDLY LIGHT' continues to brighten our way in the days to come. 'For all that have been THANKS And all that will be YES.' |
